Glorious October: Sixty-Three Years of Freedom and Sacrifices That Appeal to the Nation’s Conscience
By: Naila Saleh Hashem
With the dawn of freedom and the celebrations of Glorious October, the national memory recalls the journey of a people who chose to break the chains of colonialism, reject subjugation and foreign tutelage, and forge their path toward dignity and independence. Sixty-three years have passed since the October 14 Revolution, whose first spark ignited in the mountains of Radfan under the leadership of the freedom fighter Rajeh bin Ghalib Labouza and his comrades. Their struggle marked the beginning of a new chapter in the fight against British colonial rule, as the will of the Southern people inscribed a lasting page in the history of national liberation.
The October Revolution was not merely a passing military confrontation; it was the expression of a people’s determination to secure their right to freedom, identity, and dignity, and their refusal to remain under domination and foreign control. Throughout the struggle, the blood of martyrs mingled with the hopes of generations, transforming their sacrifices into a national legacy and a responsibility that obliges everyone to safeguard the revolution’s achievements and preserve its objectives.
Every year, October returns carrying the memories of heroes and freedom fighters who dreamed of a free homeland where its people could enjoy security, justice, and dignity. Yet this year’s celebrations are overshadowed by profound sorrow. Between the glories of the past and the challenges of the present, the country stands at a perilous crossroads, where fears for future generations intertwine with hopes of escaping the cycle of conflict and war.
With every joyful national anniversary, we also encounter bitterness and heartache. Mothers have lost their sons, fathers have been exhausted by waiting, and families have paid a heavy price in security and stability. On the front lines, our sons continue to fight amid harsh conditions and complex challenges. Their lives and sacrifices remain a trust placed in the hands of us all—one that must never be reduced to mere statistics or ceremonial words that are soon forgotten. The blood of our sons is neither cheap nor something to be bought or sold.
Protecting the homeland at this critical juncture is a collective responsibility that requires political and social awareness, the prioritization of reason and dialogue, and a rejection of everything that deepens divisions and expands the circle of suffering. It also requires preserving state institutions, safeguarding rights and freedoms, strengthening justice and accountability, and working toward a future that embraces everyone and offers young people genuine hope for a tomorrow no longer ruled by war or held hostage by crises.
May God have mercy on the martyrs of the October Revolution and all the martyrs of the homeland. May He protect our sons on the front lines, spare our country further bloodshed and destruction, and grant our leaders the wisdom needed to overcome this dangerous crossroads.
